What to Expect

Before your treatment

We will have a chat about your reasons for wanting reflexology, your current health and wellbeing and any relevant medical history. I will always share with you the areas or systems I will be focusing on, and this part of the session helps me tailor the treatment to your needs. You will remain fully clothed during the treatment; I only need you to remove your shoes and socks. I recommend you wear something you’d be comfortable lounging in but avoid leggings so I can treat your lower legs.

During your treatment

Treatments usually take place on a reclining chair but can adapt to any accessibility needs. The treatment starts with some mindful breathing to bring us both into the healing space, followed by a gentle relaxation sequence to help bring awareness into your body. I work on each foot individually, applying gentle pressure to reflex points across the feet and lower legs. I end the session with a foot massage followed by some more mindful breathing to bring us back into the room. I also encourage clients to shut their eyes to get the maximum benefit of the treatment but of course conversation is welcome too.

After your treatment

There will be space for you to discuss anything that came up for you during the treatment, and I’ll also share any areas that I found out of balance. I always recommend upping your water intake after a treatment and going with the flow of whatever comes up for you in the day or two after your session. If you’d like to read more about healing responses to reflexology, I can share some useful information with you afterwards and if you have questions or something you’d like to share following your treatment I’m always available by email.

FAQs

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is based on the idea that the whole of the body is mapped out on the feet through reflex points. Gentle and varied pressure is used to stimulate these points and in turn activates our parasympathetic nervous division response (the opposite of fight or flight) which allows our healing response to kick in.

Does reflexology hurt?

Reflexology should never be painful; the whole purpose is to encourage deep relaxation. There are areas on the feet that are naturally more sensitive than others, and this is why a varied pressure is used throughout the treatment. I’ve even had ticklish clients who’ve fallen asleep during treatments.

I’m worried about how my feet look, can I still come?

Our feet are as unique as our faces and there is no such thing as perfect feet. Dry, hard or cracked skin is more common than you’d think. As long as you don’t have an infection or open wound your feet are suitable for treatment.

Do I need to bring anything?

I have weighted eye masks and blankets available but if you want to bring anything to make your treatment more comfortable such as your own eye mask or ear plugs, you’re welcome to.

Can I bring my child?

I recommend arranging childcare for any children over 1 for your session to get the most out of it and really allow yourself some TLC. Reflexology with your baby, especially newborns can be a calming connecting time.

How many sessions will I need?

This is totally down to you and the reason you’re receiving treatments. One off treatments are a lovely treat to yourself and a great way to boost general wellbeing. Monthly treatments are a great way to manage stress, chronic or long-term health conditions. A block of fortnightly or weekly sessions could be considered for specific conditions like insomnia or if you’re having a flare up as the effects of treatments are cumulative.

Is reflexology suitable during pregnancy?

Reflexology can be safely enjoyed in the lead up to and throughout pregnancy. If you have any serious concerns, I always recommend that you consult your GP or midwife. For pregnancy treatments I recommend at least a monthly session throughout the majority of your pregnancy and then ideally fortnightly or even weekly from 32 weeks to help prepare the body and mind for birth.

Can I have reflexology alongside medical treatment?

Absolutely! This is exactly what complementary therapies are designed for, to be used alongside conventional medical care, often helping to alleviate symptoms and promote wellbeing. Treatments can be tailored to you so…
